Mary Guterson - Adult Fiction
Mary Guterson's first novelWe Are All Fine Here (2005) captured public attention from the start. Publishers Weekly says of the book "In this wry, brutally honest debut novel, Guterson slashes into the happy homilies of chick lit, revealing the underside of happily ever after". Seattle Times describes the work as "... a situation full of sex, goofiness and pathos, and vividly spare writing that reads like real life." Mary Guterson, in an interview with 'Seattlest' reveals that she wrote We Are All Fine Here at the Bainbridge Public Library. "I just called this chair at the library my office. I wrote most of the book there. They have a thermostat in there that I found so I would turn the thermostat there to the level that I wanted. I was like the crazy lady at the library. You're not supposed to eat and I'd have my little food, my bare feet up, and they (the librarians) would just pretend not to see me." Mary Guterson has continued her close relationship with the Bainbridge Public Library since then. She is actively involved in library and community affairs. She also continues her writing career without leaving grease stains on her favorite library chair. In 2009 her second book Gone to the Dogs was launched to critical acclaim.
