A
gift to Bainbridge Public Library (BPL) from your estate is an enduring tribute
to your love of community and your belief that libraries matter.
There
are many ways to give to BPL. Here are some ideas to discuss with your lawyer,
accountant or financial advisor.
- Outright
gift of cash, stock, or other securities: Provides a charitable tax deduction
in the year that you make the donation. You avoid paying capital gains taxes on
appreciated stocks and other securities. For complete instructions for the
transfer of appreciated stock or other securities, please contact the Bainbridge
Public Library Treasurer at or 206-866-1250.
- Bequest:
Defers a gift until after your lifetime. The gift is exempt from estate taxes.
Examples are: Cash, retirement accounts, insurance policy, or other property.
- Gift
of life insurance: Offers several ways to maximize your gift. This helps avoid
capital gains taxes and estate taxes. Additionally, it provides a charitable
deduction.
- Open a savings account at your bank with Bainbridge Public Library named as the beneficiary. (A payable-on-death account.)
- Donor-advised
fund*: Establishes a self-directed fund for charitable giving. This fund allows
you to receive an immediate tax deduction and distribute money to BPL
immediately or over any time period. You can contribute cash, appreciated
securities or real estate without incurring capital gains taxes.
- Charitable
Remainder Trust*: Gives you income for life. The remaining balance goes to the
Bainbridge Public Library. You get a charitable deduction at the time you set
up the trust.
- Charitable
Lead Trust*: Gives Bainbridge Public Library income for a certain period of
time to be determined by you. Your heirs receive the remainder.
* Note: these documents may have specific administration
requirements and are often irrevocable.
