Leigh Calvez - Natural Sciences
Leigh Calvez has worked with animals all of her
life - as a scientist, naturalist and nature writer. She served as
research director on various projects at the Ocean Mammal Institute and
has worked on whale watch boats in the U.S., New Zealand, British
Columbia, and the Azores Islands. Calvez finds the time to write in her
spare time. She is the author of
Whale Watching on the West Coast (2013) and
The Hidden Lives of Owls: The Science and Spirit of Nature's
Most Elusive Birds (2016). Her book on owls takes readers on
adventures into the world of owl-watching, avian science, and the deep forest
at night. Calvez makes the science entertaining and accessible while exploring
questions about the human-animal connection, habitat, owl calls, social
behavior, and mythology. Fellow animal writer Sy Montgomery comments
"You’ll love going owling with superb naturalist and writer Leigh Calvez. Like
the birds themselves,
The Hidden Lives of Owls is filled with drama,
mystery, and surprise. You’ll come away from this riveting book blessed with
owl wisdom that will enlarge your world forever.”
