Jerry Elfendahl - Local History
Long-time islander Jerry Elfendahl has been active in community affairs for as long as anyone remembers. A few years ago he helped galvanize support for the Yeomalt Cabin Fund and currently he likes to remind islanders that the pilings along Bainbridge's shoreline - about to be removed - serve as a valuable reminder of the island's maritime past. Elfendahls' community efforts and his work in the humanities led to him being named an Island Treasure in 2000, the year the award was created by the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council. The award honors excellence in the arts and/or humanities along with being an inspiration to others in the community. Elfendahl has certainly been an inspiration. In addition to his community work he is also a Bainbridge Island Review contributing writer and has authored two booklets with local appeal: Streams of Bainbridge Island: names, history, folkore & culture and Bainbridge Island multiple choices : a quiz on local history.
