Atkinson is the author of Highways and Dancehalls (1996).
Described as gritty and hard-edged, the novel tells the story of
Harvard-educated Sarah - better known as Tabitha, the Dante-quoting stripper
who plies her trade in the mining towns and middle-class suburbs of British Columbia.
The book was short-listed for three big Canadian literary awards, the Governor
General's Award for fiction, the Chapters/Books in Canada First Novel Award,
and the Commonwealth Prize.
