William Cleveland - Art
William Cleveland is an artist, musician, writer, and founder of the Center for the Study of Art and Community on Bainbridge Island. "Recognizing a direct link between the health and vitality of a community and the creative and imaginative capacity therein", writes the The Bainbridge Island Review, "Cleveland has dedicated his life to serving as a bridge between those two areas of society..." Cleveland's books Art In Other Places (2000) and Making Exact Change (2005) are considered key works in the field of arts-based community development. His most recent book Art and Upheaval: Artists at Work on the World's Frontlines (2008) chronicles artists working in communities facing extreme social, political and environmental crises. A new book, Between Grace and Fear: The Role of the Arts in a Time of Change is due to be published soon.
