Charles W. Lindenberg - Local Interest, Navy
Lindenberg lived on Bainbridge Island while attending the Puget Sound Naval Academy in the late 1940s. The school closed in 1951 and subsequently morphed into the Messenger House. Lindenberg still has fond memories of his time as a young cadet - despite strict military discipline and instructors' unwanted attention. Decades after leaving Bainbridge Island he put down his recollections in The Academy (1998), a well-written account of a by-gone era. In a copy of the book he donated to the Bainbridge Library, Lindenberg wrote the following dedication: "For the people of Bainbridge Island, who had to endure us cadets - may this bring memories, and a smile."
